How to Make Thieves Oil

Updated: Jan 15, 2021

Thieves Oil is a old blend of essential oils that has been used for centuries. Some companies would have you believe that you need to buy their blends or that you need to spend a lot on the oils, but you can make this yourself and save hundreds each year.

According to the story passed down from generation to generation, the use of thieves oil dates back to the year 1413. During the Bubonic Plague pandemic that devastated a Europe. The plague spread like wild-fire and it seemed impossible to be in the vicinity without contracting it, and at that time, getting the plague was a death sentence.

However, according to legend during this plague, four thieves were caught and charged with stealing from the sick and dying. These thieves never got the plague, despite their close contact with the victims on a regular basis.

During this era, the crime these men committed was punishable by being burned alive at the stake. The judge however was so intrigued by how they had been immune to this terrible disease, that he told them if they shared their secret he would spare them from being burnt at the stake.

They told the judge that they were perfume and spice merchants who lost their income due to the closure of all the sea ports. They had created an essential oil recipe that when applied to their hands, ears, temples, feet & a mask over their mouths, kept them safe from infection. The judge was true to his word and hanged them for their crimes instead of being burnt alive.

After this blend came to light, doctors who treated plague victims put the herbal infusion on their hands, ears, temples and feet, and wore beak-like masks stuffed with cloth containing this same amazing blend. The image above in this post shows what those beak like hoods looked like.

Now flash forward 600 years and there are many essential oil companies that claim to have the true blend, and they tweak it a bit here and there but in the end we all have the recipe and you can use the brand you want to get the same effects. Our Rebel Herbs essential oils are super premium quality but at a reasonable price. The recipe for thieves oil below include cinnamon leaf extract not bark because the leaf has a greater level of Eugenol. This compound has additional properties that we think are lend themselves to a more rounded blend than the bark does.

The thieves blend recipe

Ingredients

Directions

Mix all essential oils together in a dark glass bottle. This blend is very strong and must be diluted for safe use. The essential oil content should only account for 1 to 2% of the total formula. This means that when formulating homemade cleaning products or other creations, 6 to 12 drops of essential oil can be added per ounce of carrier oil.

To freshen the air in your home or workplace, add a few drops of the blend to an essential oil diffuser (consult diffuser's use guide for amount) or a pot of simmering water on the stove. Diffuse for approximately 20 to 30 minutes.

Make an all-purpose spray for cleaning your home or workplace. Fill a spray bottle with half water and half 91% isopropyl alcohol and add the essential oil blend at a 1 to 2% dilution rate. Spray on countertops, desks, and other surfaces. Make sure to shake before using. (1/2 cup of 91% isopropyl alcohol and 40 drops of the thieves blend)

Mix the essential oil blend at a 1 to 2% dilution rate with organic jojoba or olive oil. Use as a massage oil for weary muscles and tired feet, or dab on skin throughout the day for general support (test on a small patch of skin first in case of personal skin sensitivity). (1/2 cup of olive oil and 40 drops of thieves blend)

To help clear up occasional stuffiness, mix a 1 to 2% dilution of the essential oil blend with organic coconut oil and rub under the nose or on the chest. Or, place 1 to 2 drops in a bowl of hot, steaming water and inhale the vapors under a towel. (warm 1/2 cup of coconut oil so it becomes liquid, then remove from the heat add 40 drops of the thieves blend and mix completely allowing the coconut oil to cool and return to a solid state.

All of these ideas have been used for centuries and a will work for you, without breaking the bank.
